Lots of old sounding new house music floating around at the moment as a whole new generation of younger producers are getting the bug no doubt after taking a trip down house music's more prestigious past

Lukas's remix makes use of up to date production sounds that nicely takes the final output into the current without relying too much on the past to get the point and flow across on the dance floor

A great sounding bass line accompanies the track for that all important low end swagger that makes this early release in 2012 sound fresh and exciting from start to finish

Great to hear some restraint on the stabs and sample use which only goes to add to the drama

This is definitely not a poor imitation of a lackluster 90's House B side thankfully

Big up Lukas for shining some much needed light on the whole bass heavy new house vibe

Anticipation is building nicely around the return of The Jazz Rooms to it's spiritual home in Brighton on Saturday 11th February

Russ Dewbury's legendary Jazz influenced session ended not long after the 24 licensing laws kicked in and with it went one of the last "groove based" dance sessions in our city before the whole disco thing slowly picked up the pieces

Now, with all the economic turmoil going about at present you would think that Russ would plump for a monthly night however he's gone for a weekly session down in the basement which will make this Brighton's only weekly groove based dance party

A Brief History Of The Brighton Groove Based Scene Caught On Camera

What this passage is hoping to achieve is to give an insight into the beginnings of our musical scene that occurred in Brighton around 2008 onwards

To aid things along there's some pictures, video (coming soon) and links to information on those that made things happen at that time so please take a look around if you need to find out a little more

The above link in capitals contains a small yet fairly healthy selection of first hand images that nicely capture the initial stages of The Brighton Groove Based (or Disco) Scene taking shape around the later stages of the first decade of The Naughties and into 2011

Sadly there's no documentation past 2012 so we'll have to leave that part of the story to someone else as far as documentation is concerned

There's a slightly more comprehensive visual history available via the links below if you wish to get really stuck in to looking at the places and faces connected

The pictures and videos that have been taken aren't a definitive collection by no means, however they do cover the period from 2008 onwards when things began to take shape across our city

The links provide plenty of crowd shots caught on camera depicting the events that were building around the bars throughout 2008 onwards alongside the later inclusion of images taken from various local club spaces once the producers, record labels and dj agencies that came out of this short but energetic era took things to the next level beyond 2010

I must mention that sadly there are developments which occurred before 2008 which aren't shown due to their random, infrequent or extremely niche nature however I intend to put something together or at least investigate a little deeper over the course of time to give this documentation some greater depth

From memory these developments included

Brighton's first Nu Disco club night called 100 Watt at The Hanbury Ballrooms back in 2002/3, Greg Wilson's very first Brighton visit after 23 years in 2007, Heavy Disco and Broadcast Loft Parties that were operating in Brighton in the early Naughties and The Brighton Frequency Festival that included a handful of the scenes early players that are listed lower down in this passage

Disco Diaries which was DJ Charlie Brown's night also gets a mention as do the Soft Rocks parties that were held out in a recording studio in Portslade also get special mentions as precursory nights run by early exponents of the Disco / Groove Based Brighton Scene

In 2008 this blog was set up to spread the word about the groove based sounds that were emanating across the city on a local underground level through the efforts of many local bar djs scoping their sonic landscapes outside of club land at this time

Shortly after the initial posts on this blog appeared the need to bring all the separate factions together that were combining on Brighton's early scene which were namely the bars djs and the increasing numbers of interested dancers became a reality and immediate necessity

Facilitating this need to combine both factions into something that was accessible and also very much true to the roots of electronic dance music culture that the scene pays it's respects to was achieved through 3 annual Go Bang Brighton festival months held in May each year that not only helped to cement what people listen and dance to now but also crucially acted as a meeting point for all connected (all be it very loosely in those initial 3 years from 2008-2010)

Coincidentally the formulation or want of a better word "promotion" of the scene was very much aided by the increased use of social networking for which all those driving the awareness about what was going on used to great extent

Without Facebook for example the scene itself would probably of taken far longer to grow or remained the preserve of those lucky few in the know or members of DJ History.com

Moving forward to today, we have now seen successful club nights established, music producers gain worldwide notoriety and some great music labels that support groove based dance music set up

Additionally, major players across The UK that come to visit Brighton as DJs or stand alone club nights now find a scene here that is very much clued up on the music and has a proud history all of it's very own

However times do change and as such the focus of this blog has slightly shifted into documenting occurrences associated with Brighton's groove based scene as apposed to promoting it's long past secret attributes and the music associated with it (disco, house and boogie)

Thankfully new and exciting music still comes through alongside the unearthing of the long lost gems as well as news on what's still happening out there, so at least for now there will be an equal measure of historical and also up to date content on here

My Favourite Remixer Of 2011

About this time of year the internet is full of suggestions and recommendations as to who has produced the best tracks, provided the best mixes or to whom has chiseled the greatest edit of the past 12 months

Having not really ventured too far down the edit route or spent that much time listening to online mixes in 2011, my choice of celebration leaves me searching around the long list of productions that have graced many a night over the last year

Upon careful reflection there were sadly too many tracks to put into a definitive list that I felt satisfied with, however on a musical note it was the omni present sound of house music that I can happily look towards for my cues when attempting to pick something relevant as an out right winner this year

So, too many productions to chose between which leaves my choice this year with a couple of choice remixes which were delivered by the same person

The two remixes in question come from Tornado Wallace with both finished tracks being 100% winners on the dance floor for the majority of 2011 either at The Greendoor Store, The Globe or various parties across the south coast from Brighton to Southsea

The two remixes on show are slightly different with Garden Of Vangulf by The Loin Brother being a out and out groove based houser and the second choice of JD73's Into The Night being a jazzier affair that none the less appealed to house heads when played towards the middle of 2011 onwards

Signing Off For 2011 At The Greendoor Store

Closing off 2011 in the warehouse

Just wanted to pass on our thanks all those that have come and danced at The Greendoor Store in Brighton this year

We've had a fair few classic nights in your company since taking on the party in February after receiving a tip off regarding this "mysterious new warehouse venue" from our friend Trevor

Looking back over these last 9 months its safe to say that without your continued good nature on the dance floor and open minded musical approach we wouldn't be sat here now thinking about what next year brings

The message is definitely thank you for being a wonderful crowd and for enjoying all the music we've played for you, be it the staples of boogie and disco or the increasing influence of groove based house which featured heavily on not just ours but also our guests play lists this year

We all now appreciate 2011 has been a tough year for a lot of people. We've had our fair share of friends that have had to of dealt with some challenging situations themselves

However through all of the tension and stress you kept on coming back to dance time and time again in 2011 regardless

This commitment supports the belief we've held for a long time in the value that many still firmly put on combining social activity whilst checking out dance music and pulling a few shapes at the same time

What ever happens, this belief will always be the driving force that keeps us going hopefully for many years to come no matter where the music takes us

Speaking about music, at The Greendoor Store we've been blessed with some great guest DJs this last year

As this post is being written we would of just finished our season with our final party on a Saturday night in November (which was a blinder btw) with COR from Southsea who brought us their 5 man approach to djing

COR now join a list of names that have graced us this last year including Tim, Maxxi Sound System, Toby Tobias, Paul, Andy, Steve, Celia, Rowan and Soft Rocks

A small percentage of the above names have gone on to bigger picture scenarios such as production or European and worldwide appearances so we may not get chance to see them for a while

However for the vast majority of occasions our guests are very much local enthusiasts that know how to rock a party and with that firmly in mind we shall be once again looking towards home for DJ talent that will come your way in 2012

That's it, we're back at The Greendoor Store in March 2012 for more of exactly the same

Thanks to all the staff at the venue that enabled us the opportunity to keep such an important aspect of Brightonian culture moving onwards and of course, all of You for making it all happen month in and month out

The guy behind the idea who's collected this fine array of awkward moments from the console is called Mick Friction

The site itself has been set up so anyone can forward on their visual evidence for all the world to see and sympathize with in unison (especially the DJs)

However it's not all one way way traffic as there's plenty of DJ fight back messages to laugh at and enjoy plus a few positive messages from the odd dancer who gets the idea that the DJ is not an IPod

Tales of murder and snapped Beyonce records shoved in the face of teenage girls all go towards making up some excellent viewing

My favorite is the pre-emptive warning that clearly states "Please Don't Leave Your Girlfriend In The Booth" ?????

White Night Festival Reportage

The White Night Festival certainly gets the good folks of Brighton out en mass at least once a year other than on New Years Eve that is

We found this going on down on the seafront after a lovely walk around town with friends, which for me is the most important aspect of the whole event

There's so much standing around looking at cardboard cut outs of trees with slowly changing lights that you can take before apathy sets in and the mind begins to wonder

Ben and Tim were throwing a great session at The Fortune Of War which was not on the festival's list of things to see and do but totally made up for a night of potential head scratching

My fault though for not attempting Urban Future Golf or investigating the subversive uses of CCTV by some clever film makers

I'll try harder next year I'm sure

Just bagged a few Saturday night dates at The Greendoor Store for our first warehouse parties of 2012 in Brighton

It's been nearly 12 months since we set foot in the place with the idea of combining music, visuals, venue and a proper crowd of dance music enthusiasts on a slightly bigger scale than our previous sessions

We're absolutely well made up about how wonderful the parties have been since being offered bi-monthly Fridays back in February and can't wait to do it all again in 2012 but on Saturday nights instead

A huge thanks to everyone that has kept the spirit well and truly alive on the dance floor, the management and bar staff and for the doormen for taking care of business (when they're not partying with us that is)

Basically, loads of art installations, music, film and generally all sorts of interesting things to see and do right throughout the night in the city center

Apparently a cheeky tech house party kicked off in one of the multi-story car parks last year

However if you can't find anything like that this year you can always watch some local dubsteppers dancing around their beatboxes which is always interesting viewing if you come across them

After spending hours in The Disco Dungeon working on his new material and djing at after parties, it now appears that poor Affy isn't in a good way

If you see him around town please approach with caution and under no circumstances feed him anything other than a truck load of Vitamin C

Reports from our local dance music community suggest that Affy when approached responds negatively to the words "disco" and "duck" if used in the same sentence

We've been asked to support our local homeless charity The Clock Tower Sanctuary over the course of a few events to help enable greater awareness of the good work they do in Brighton

Sadly the organizations next event that was due to take place in December at a brand new and widely self advertised local hub of all things Brighton has been pulled after being promised to The Clock Tower Team only a couple of months ago

If you are a Brighton venue that supports local charities and wants to help make a difference in the city then please get in touch through the blog and we'll pass your interest on to the people at Clock Tower

Needless to say they're a great bunch and very committed to helping others

In February next year there's a booked in event with special guest Leftside Wobble joining Disco Deviant (Paul) and ourselves in the city for a special fundraiser which we're very much behind and looking forward to

Really enjoying this great roller from New Zealander Frank Booker that's been out for a while now

Yep, I've been slow on the up take, but so what, finding this was such a treat this weekend after trawling the net for new music whilst my girlfriend was on holiday

There's a few of Frank's productions stored away around here somewhere however this one sits on top of the pile........... no, scrub that, this actually sits very near the top of not just my Frank records but most of my house/disco hybrid collection too

Naturally from a djing perspective it's good to be able to visualize how a track will work on a dance floor environment before it gets played out for which I'm totally confident that this will go down well across a wide landscape and appeal to both disco and house heads alike

If not then I've sadly totally missed the point of groove based dance music now

The subtle vocal sample really cements the overall vibe, so keep an eye out around 3 minute marker as that's the lift point on this one

Had a lovely evening last night at The Grand Hotel on Brighton Seafront, it's that 5 Star establishment that'll cost you a tidy some if you ever want to stay there

We only stayed for a few hours as it's was Neil's birthday which was held in the bar

There was a Jazz singer on, he was really good so I thought after my new found interest in jazzier grooves I would post up something a little closer to home in keeping with the blog

The Saint - A Late Night Conversation On The Streets Of Brighton

I met a Gentleman once outside The Coopers Cask in Hove just after djing with Larry who is one of my oldest friends from the pre Brighton years in Newcastle

The man in question we found ourselves in the company of this very night was around 20 to 30 years our senior with a tanned yet very old face to accompany his once toned yet now painfully decaying frame

Sadly life had caught this fella up, yet still our un-named elder statesman mustered enough energy and determination to get out on a Saturday night and find his way eventually and by accident to where Larry and I were djing that evening on the Brighton and Hove boarder

After the gig Larry and myself proceeded to walk the short journey, either home or to a house party perhaps, sadly it's 10 years ago that we met this chap so the actual detail of the night is starting to get a little hazy unfortunately

One thing that thankfully remains crystal clear is the conversation both Larry and I shared with our mysterious late night friend who ushered us over to him after the nights djing activity finished

Our friend sat us down next to him on the pavement and began to comment on the music he had heard that evening, although this wasn't the main topic of his conversation he did appear to appreciate the evenings entertainment in what must of been his local watering hole perhaps

Words, sentences and emotions our friend demonstrated in conversation quickly moved on to this magical place that our now educator was beginning to describe clearly through the eyes of his younger and much more athletic self

The words "The Saint, the best club to hear disco music ever" is the last thing I can remember this lonely yet once jet setting International Man of Disco said before we parted company and went our separate ways

We saw this guy only one more time, alone and by himself in the night around The Coopers Cask maybe transporting himself back in his mind to another time and space for which he shared with Larry and myself previously

Out of honor for a long forgotten encounter one summers night, I hope you enjoy the video of the club we were given a brief insight into almost 10 years ago

Brilliant news for anyone coming to tonights warehouse party in Brighton

Our very special guest DJ will be none other than Ms Paris Hilton

As some of you may know, Paris has been working hard recently to become the "most powerful female house dj in the world"

Tonight she'll be ditching the house tunes in favour of a bag full of rare Paradise Garage and Loft Party influenced disco accompanied by some of her bad ass edits she's currently been working on in the studio with some guy called Will

Paris has told us that in her attempt to become "more powerful" she'll be carrying all her vinyl herself in order to build up some muscle strength

There's even talk of her using her own Bozak Mixer and a specially custom built Reel To Reel Player that she will also be carrying from the boot of her trusty Morris Minor which will be parked outside the venue and where she'll be signing autographs from after her 3 hour set

Paris said "I can't wait to play tonight and meet all my fans. Naturally I'm all about the music but if anyone wants to cop a feel then be my guest. Just as long as it all futhers my dj career then it's all good, unlike my mixing skills which are terrible"

Alongside this great scoop all attendees tonight will gain free entry to tomorrows rave at the back of Brighton that signals the end of Brighton Summer Time we've been told

Keep an eye out for the Secret Rizla Arena with The Lowlife DJs amongst others playing all their favorite Ibiza dance tracks through their Ipods plus The Unabombers who have promised to play some "pukka" trance music to the masses from a small burger van on site

Naturally the main attraction will be none other than Harvey who's flying in to the UK for his first ever commerical dance set planned for around 6pm on the mainstage

When asked, Harvey excitedly explained "Yeah this is a great opportunity for me to show the other side of my musical tastes, I can't wait to bosh the f**k out of the sound system whilst also hopefully converting a few people to my cause to topple Paul Oakenfold as the worlds top DJ"

Audio in Brighton will be celebrating their 7th birthday on Friday 16th September 2011 this week

I remember going to their opening club night very clearly way back in 2004 which was hosted by Carl Faure (now Warrior One) and Mex with the guest being James Lavelle

As I rememmber Carl and Mex held it down on Saturdays as SWIM and Fridays we're given over to Stompaphunk who graduated from The Funky Buddha down the road

Since the early days the club has featured some amazing local residents such as Roo (Infinite Records) Barry and Gareth (ASKEW) Positive Sound System, Stompaphunk, Maxxi Sound System and Disco Deviant supporting guests such as 4Hero, Bugz In The Attic, Horsemeat Disco, Greg Wilson, The Revenge, Andy Weatherall, Disco Bloodbath, Leftside Wobble, Norman Jay, Cosmic Boogie and Raahan to name just a few

Without a shadow of a doubt Audio has supported our local groove based scene through some lean years in clubland whilst always going that extra little bit when looking after their performers and artists via a consistently friendly and very professional approach

A very well deserved 7 year stretch and a big happy birthday to all down on the seafront

Brighton Source Article - Groove Based Dance Music In Brighton

James the editor at our local entertainment bible The Brighton Source has indicated that there's interest on the magaizines part in a potential article that covers the developments across the scene in Brighton

We sent James the idea a while back and he's replied to say that it is something that the magazine will investigate in the future

James ran a very concise piece on the Greg Wilson party back at The Ocean Rooms in 2007 which signified the gradual start of the more overground exceptance of the music and has a good angle on what's been happening since then locally

We'll be looking at going back to around 2005/2006 depending on how the piece of documentation works out and would like to hear from anyone associated within the scene either as a dj, promoter, musican, venue or dancer that has been involved over the years

The Brighton Source has slowly began to feature some leading local and national players on the groove based/disco scene over the last 12 months which when we think back wouldn't of been remotely excepted or understood around 5-6 years ago

A major theme that has been suggested for the documentation to follow is the local interest story that follows the involvement of people into and past their thirties that still go out to groove based nights in the city

However there would need to be the need to have a strong musical slant to make the documentation more complete

Good news coming our way this September

There’s a new night starting in Brighton, this time courtesy of our mate Tim from theacidhouse.com site

The night Tim has put together which is called HEADROOM is being held deep in the basement setting of The Globe of Middle Street with the launch party kicking proceedings off on Saturday 10th September

As with all parties now held in the basement, Tim will be supplying additional PA to enhance the general approach favoured by both party hosts and dancers that now gravitate towards Brighton’s disco destination venue for their fix of both music and party vibrations aimed at the over 30’s and their musically savvy younger friends

A consummate record/music collector whilst also head and shoulders above the vast majority of Brighton DJ’s, Tim is already setting his disco stall out clearly for his HEADROOM Party with a musical policy in keeping with our cities groove based tastes

An added bonus for everyone coming to HEADROOM is that Tim doesn’t resign himself either to just exclusively supporting his own nights

A crucial supporter of most nights in the city over the last two years and always actively taking part as a dancer on the cities dance floors with wife Shani, Tim has cemented a great reputation as a dj with an ear for quality music as well as being able to spot all the vital elements that go into building a great party

Obviously with a developed appreciation for music and dance music culture in general we can expect Tim to take Brighton and The Globe through the longer nights with some fantastic musical occasions crafted by a true acid house soldier, DJ and supporter of dance music roots party culture

Tim kindly agreed to answering a handful of questions just to add that little personal touch before HEADROOM starts it’s life as a basement party in Brighton on Saturday 10th September at The Globe

- Tim, You’re acknowledged as a huge supporter of Brighton’s groove based music and party scene. Having had exposure to other nights in the city over the last couple of years, what elements if any will you be taking to HEADROOM at The Globe.

Nights such Disco Deviant have been a huge influence over the last few years, and I have had the pleasure to experience them from both sides of the decks. I am not aiming to replicate what is already out there so I have not really considered what elements from other nights I would take with me. The basic elements of any night remain the same, people, music, venue, but of course I have some special ideas that I will try out, and I am also looking to collaborate with other nights. Headroom adds to the strength of the scene in Brighton and in particular at The Globe, by further cementing the foundations of a go to venue for a good underground music policy.

-Why did You pick The Globe as your space for the HEADROOM parties. Is there anything in particular that The Globe gives HEADROOM that a conventional club/bar space can’t?

The Globe is such a cool space for an intimate party, the staff are really friendly and Carly has the door policy spot on. I have held previous parties there over the last year that have worked really well, because it is a relatively small space people get to know each other and it is really social, it is like having all your friends under one roof, even if you have just met them that night. I have spoken to party goers who had just pop in for a quick pint, then ended up staying the whole night because they loved the vibe.

-Musically, is there anything that will set HEADROOM apart from the other nights all helping to keep the scene healthy in Brighton at the moment or will you be keeping close to the already proven formula associated with the groove based scene over the last couple of years

I would like to think Headroom will offer another mix of colour to the spectrum of music, the music policy is quite broad allowing space and freedom to take the music in whatever direction feels right on that night, a certain element of surprise will always be on the agenda, I am currently working on some exclusive material for the nights. I am booking some great djs too, the Launch night will Andy G (Electric Sex) and Alphabet City (Under the Shade, International Feel) on deck duties, whom both have their own unique style and sound.

-You’re adding additional PA like all the individual nights now at The Globe do as standard. What equipment are you installing at The Globe for the HEADROOM parties

20k Funktion One Rig........errr...actually I will be using my Mackie Thump15s, they have easily enough guts and depth of sound for the basement, on the subject of sound, it is very high on my agenda to make sure the quality is just right, I have a technical background so i am always checking audio signals to ensure people have a good time without damaging their ears, yes it can be loud when appropriate, but needs to be controlled, it is an art in itself, using the right kit helps, but understanding the kit helps more.

-What are your hopes for HEADROOM at The Globe and why should people come and experience the magic.

In a nut shell, it is about having fun with like minded people and playing some damn fine music, The Globe is a wonderful place to have a dance in a non club environment, it is like have a private house party. We shall be holding a sermon to summon up the Spirit of 88, to touch our souls as it waves the wand of positive vibes through the warm sounds that will be played.

-Will you be recording your nights or will people have to put a little effort in and come and experience the vibe first hand for themselves at HEADROOM

if I remember to bring recording equipment, then yes I am sure a few nights will get recorded...but it is not high on the agenda, you only get half the picture when you listen to a recording of a live mix from a past event, you have to be their to experience all the colour, sight, touch, atmosphere and most importantly the people..it is all part of the experience, you don't get that from a recording.

-Finally and probably most importantly, will Shani be accompanying you and HEADROOM with her bongos as we’ve heard she’s a keen Bongolian after a night on the rave..

Haha, most definitely......you know actually, it is something I would love to happen and I would more than welcome any other percussionist to join in too, I really love a live element to the music.

This was big, so big that it was one of the tunes that stayed with us all weekend at the recent Brighton Pride Weekend

My girlfriend thinks it's called "Funky Funk Funk Funk", Charlie is proud that he has it on vinyl, Neal (after a few pints) reckons it's his tune and no one else plays it and Andy has been playing it for years

Well the tune is well over 5 years old now and at the forefront of a fair few dancers and djs minds by the looks of things last weekend

New material from Affy and Paul put together in Brighton's infamous late night disco basement come emergency Go Bang recording studio (thanks Paul for letting us into your home)

Loads of influences on this one that kind of captures the housier end of what we've been playing this year

Additionally, Matt the VJ has produced a video to accompany the track using clips from the legendary NYC Vogue documentary Paris Is Burning, it should be ready to be uploaded very soon he tells us

Really looking forward to playing this over Pride Weekend in Brighton which starts tomorrow and continues until late Sunday/Monday morning

Sadly Affy is in NYC this year but he'll be around in spirit none the less

The Brighton Frequency Festival would of without a doubt been one of the souths leading boutique festivals if it had continued past it's first year

Above is one of two videos showing footage of the festival that was put on by a fantastic collective of local Brightonians who had come together through the cities underground party scene over many years before the festival we see here taking place in 2007

We've lined up an outdoor gathering near St James Street/George Street in Kemptown to take place on Sunday 14th August 2011

The Pride event this year has the contract for all music and bars along the St James Street area so it's with pride that alongside Calabash who have their party at The Volks on both days over the weekend we stay firmly independant yet able to add something at the same time

Unlike the main street party we're not restricted to the event music policy and sound restrictions as we've secured a temporary events license that fortunately allows us to play the style of music we want at the levels we want from 5pm untill midnight at our secret location on Sunday

There's a bar and bbq all sorted with projections and a sound system for around 150 people

Musically we're paying respect to the music that embodied the original spirit of what the weekends celebrations are all about in Brighton, so expect real and future disco, acid and chicago classics with a definite roots house music vibe throughout the session

This is our first outdoor event that we've put on since 2009 and we hope you can make it go just like all the others we've done in the past in Brighton

A recent news report warning festival goers and club people that there seems to be a new strain of Ecstasy tablet containing wait for it...............MDMA (the chemical ingredient found in the 80's form of the illegal drug) has recently emerged on the BBC News Website

Be careful is the message

The higher strength pills are selling for around £10-15 which may cause immediate health concerns if taken in multiples as apposed to the £3 cheaper ones that contain caffine and stimulants in their chemical make up

Unconfirmed reports from music industry experts (based in Brighton) have suggested that immediate sales of disco and funkier forms of house music are expected to see a sharpe increase in sales over the coming months and that online advertisng for club nights and parties is expected to cease completely by the end of the year as people naturally gravitate to dance floors for fun times

Oh, and Trance music is expected to make sense to anyone over the age of 25

Going Monthly At The Greendoor Store In Brighton

Just wanted to say a big thank you to both the team at The Greendoor Store alongside everyone that has supported the bi-monthly warehouse party we started this year under Brighton Railway Station

To all our friends and disco family plus our secret guest djs Tim Rivers, Maxxi Sound System and Toby Tobias, we thank you for a great 6 month run and some brilliant moments, mainly driven on by our over use of The Nightwriters-Let The Music Use You perhaps

From September this year we're having a go at going monthly which in itself is a huge ask in this day and age yet something we feel is important to at least have a go at providing in Brighton

There's been attempts to establish regular nights on this scale before by a handful of our local compardres but nothing has really caught the imagination to enable any sustainability or longevity outside of Disco Deviant at Audio and smaller well attended nights at The Globe and Riki Tiks that still crop up

However with The Greendoor Store offering such an amazing setting our turn inevitably comes in September this year to have a go for ourselves

The format of each party will remain the same with focus being paid on our local scene as far a regular djs and club night appearances are concerned with the odd national guests adding to the mix from time to time

Matt will be on hand with the visuals which will take a more prominent role inside and also (outside the venue we hope) with some slight alterations being planned

As always the night is free and runs until 4am plus we'll be continuing with the downlow approach to invites through our mailing list system that has worked out well so far in connecting the right crowd to the parties

Calabash Take Over The Volks At Pride 2011

Our friends over at Calabash have secured two days of partying on Brighton seafront at The Volks Club for this years Pride celebrations on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th August

Calabash will be using the Volks 20K soud system each day with a selection of past and present day resident djs covering all manner of black and asian dance floor music in keeping with their musical roots

Alongside many contributors this year, Calabash have decided not to have a presence up at Preston Park due to concerns and a lack of confidence over the representation of the Local LGBT Community that Pride now unfortunately demonstrate

Although there remains a tent dedicated to black and asian music up at Preston Park this year it is no way in any shape or form connected to Calabash themselves who have supported all previous park events since 2003 until this year

Calabash is committed to providing representation for black and minority ethnic individuals within the LGBT scene. Brighton and Hove's LGBT community is becoming more diverse year upon year, ...and Calabash aims to reflect this with a focus on providing a musically diverse space at Brighton Pride with a focus on music of black and asian origin.

Just wanted to say how amazed we are that today we passed the 50,000 readers point on the blog

OK, we're not the most prolific of blogsites and we don't produce music however we've had a wonderful time so far sharing found music with people that share the same passion as we do

Since 2008 we've managed to cover many aspects of groove based dance music both modern and old with healthy selections taken by posting about anything from Go-Go to Acid House to Disco to Roots House Music and beyond

Book reviews, films, dj interviews, local news, national news, releases, labels, productions, event pictures, edits and mixes have all seen some action along the way

One of the nicest things since 2008 has been interviewing our friends and associates not just from Brighton but also from around the UK as we continue to support and remark on the achievements of those not naturally at the front of peoples minds in relation to this style of dance music we enjoy

As such one aspect to the blog will enjoy a bigger emphasis as we continue to interview people under the title of "UK DJs That Never Gave Up Their Day Jobs" in greater depth

As we speak there's already a new interview being lined up, although we're taking our time with the questioning and answering process maybe a little too much buy hey, this is just a hobby at the end of the day

That's enough for now, just need to say many thanks to all our global readers as well as everyone here in the UK and especially Brighton who continues to keep in touch and turns out for the parties we do around the place

I've been reading up recently on the time period that this track produced by Patrick Cowley and Tom Moulton is from

Two years before the highest point in 70's disco (1979) was reached and subsequently ended as far as the world outside of NYC's Gay and Black clubs were concerned this would of been what everyone was losing their minds to across the Atlantic in The States as disco reached out into suburban USA and beyond through mass radio play and commercial drive

Taking things bang up to date, it's amazing to here the original sounds of disco once again as we take a long overdue step back and pay a little respect to the music that drove the lifestyles and dancefloors in a time and space written about in great depth by those that lived this period to the maximum at clubs like The Saint, Loft, Garage and Flamingo

Naturally, Disco now describes a scene for people of a certain age that look towards slightly less commercial values within dance music or possibly a freedom to explore a wider breadth of music that covers music of black origin either in it's orginal or faithfully restored forms

For now it's all back to the 70's for this post in honour of some great RnB disco from two producers at the top of their game

I've been following The Beat Hotel on Twitter over the last 7 days who seem to post a tweet every hour about what they've got lined up this year deep in Glastonbury's market area

Found this wonderful visual representation that tracks a very familiar path from the days of northern soul up until the hardcore rave scene here in this country that I wanted to share

Mark Leckey is best known for his exhibition Industrial Light & Magic, which won the 2008 Turner prize. He had first appeared alongside Damien Hirst at the ICA's New Contemporaries show in 1990, but by 1999 had fallen off the radar. Fiorucci … was a devastating return to form

Fragments of "found" video footage from British nightclubs are spliced together featuring important stop offs on the way that the film covers nicely, including clips from the uk soul/all dayer scene and a nod towards the casual/football terrace era

There's a great segment where countless names of sports and casual clothing brands are named just before the acid house scenes are shown that are a must see for any football causal watching the film

The poignant ending of the work on show kind of states that there really hasn't been much of a new youth culture after the 90's rave scene that signals the end of this short piece that's dedicated to the hardcore followers of the uk music, street fashion and club scenes depicted here in Mark's important film documentatry

Matt Page - 'VJ' - Go Bang

Matt’s been sporadically doing visuals on and off for the last 9 years or so

He enjoys using found footage whilst misappropriating other film maker's work, especially the more underground films that rarely get screenings

Matt supports the idea of building a visual theme throughout the evening when performing live, even working in short narratives here and there

The aspect that he loves the most about doing visuals is that it's immediate

Making a film can take months or years and then there's getting it seen when it's finally finished so Matt’s visuals are fleeting, mixed live and only last a few hours before they're gone forever - much like the music they can only be experienced in the space with a crowd and can't really be repeated the same way again

Matt has enjoyed making his own narrative films and collaborates with dancers, artists and musicians on their films too

In the past he’s created visuals for nights in Brighton, from Burlesque evenings to breakbeat all nighters and shown some of his work at various films festivals in this country, Europe and the US and have had work funded by The UK Film Council

Can't speak highly enough of this nice sub bass pa having purchased this great addition to add that little extra to our own Mackie top end rig

OK we're obviously not talking about the bass quaking end of sound system culture here with The BOX PRO ACHAT 112 SUBA but we are talking adding warmth and depth to any occasion for around 100 or so people up for a dance

Having used a pair of Mackie SRM350's devoid of bass for god knows how long all I can say is that hearing music with the addition of the Pro Achat is akin to that feeling when you hold your nose and pop your ears when flying on a plane

The Unity DJ Agency is a Brighton, sorry, Hove based dj agency that has been recently set up by local dj/promoter and blogster Paul from Disco Deviant aka Pablo Contraband

If we go back to the first two or three posts on the blog you would of found finding anything groove based related in Brighton a bit of a hard ask at the best of times

Now we can proudly say we have a home grown DJ agency up and running as well as a stable scene supported by a wide section of the music community here in the city

In addition to all that's currently developing outwards, a handful of local outfits have gone on to wider acclaim and are now begining to stretch their wings on a bigger scale

Rob Fahey (Black Lodge) saw big props off the back of using Soundcloud to promote his edits and now gets booking in the UK outside of Brighton and also in Europe on occasion

Wolf Music now have a industry respected record label that features some amazing talent such as KRL, Greymatter and The Revenge and most recently Maxxi Sound System who have signed with Futureboogie in Bristol off the back off their re-edits and remixes and are enjoying bookings and remix work all over the place

The Unity Agency is slightly different from the big three dj agencies, namely The Pool, Futureboogie and Warm with its focusing aimed at a heavier underground output through it's dj roster

However and none the less the agency itself promises the same quality as the main three that tend to have a tight grip on the UK/Europe club and festival scenes now when it comes to higher end dj/producer bookings

Unity promises a fast, friendly and hassle free service for clubs, bars and festivals so you never know you may get to hear some real underground and a few not so underground players at some strange hour of the day at Glastonbury or out on a beach front in Croatia very soon that have been booked from an office in Brighton, sorry Hove actually

Claudio Coccoluto-Blues Brunch (Slack Edit)

Originally released in 2001

A solid slice of upfront house from Claudio that we,ve had a go at recently as part of the Slack Edits Series

The edit has been done in Audacity as usual as Ableton still remains a bit of an up hill struggle however this time we have used a lovely fresh wav and for once fully road tested the edit which actually worked really well on the floor

The edit sees the intro extended by using more of the original tracks beats as well as the inital vocal leading up to the first full vocal breakdown being omitted completely

After the first full vocal breakdown the track goes straight into the main groove section after we cut out the drums. This kind of gives the whole feel of the track a little more urgency thus grabbing attention earlier on

The second half of the edit simply repeats the first half with an additional stretch of the chords which kind of gives the track a more powerful punch maybe as it focus's on the funkier elements present in the original

I've had a spare bit of time on my hands recently so my Girlfriend and I carted ourselves off to Morocco for a week in the sun for some much needed downtime

Having this time away from the hustle and bustle of living in Brighton presented the opportunity to catch up on some much needed reading of the birthday presents that I have been given from friends recently

So it was with pleasure that I eventually was able to finish off Bill Brewsters and Frank Broughton's excellent read called The Record Players/DJ Revolutionaries which covers interviews with a list of "key" players within the history of the dj

The book itself recounts interviews from a healthy cross section of record players nicely pre dating the Northern Soul era (where a lot of information tends to go uncovered) as well as following a natural path through disco, mod, boogie, house, acid house, techno, jungle and ahem Tiesto

The major club nights/parties/advancements and dj's associated with the development of dance music culture get covered nicely from front to back with some interesting reading off the back of interviews with Farmer Carl Dene, Froggy, Ian Lavine, Terry Farley, Alfredo, Fabio, Tom Moulton, Francis Grasso, David Mancuso, Andy Weatherall, Danny Rampling, Pete Tong, Chip E, Mike Pickering, Marshall Jefferson, Derrick May, Juan Atkins, Frankie Knuckles PLUS MANY MORE.....

An altogether more seat of your pants read than Bill and Franks' book, Hooky nicely recounts all that was great and all that wasn't at The Hac on Whitworth Street in Manchester over it's 15 year tenure

Expect tales of poorly executed business plans, ludicrus amounts of money and alcohol going awol, gangs and doormen face offs and of course a commentry on the musical developments up until 1997 in Manchester at the New Order/Factory Records financed Hacienda

Highlights of the book were reading about the pre acid house days at the club especially in regards to DJ Hewan Clarke who worked alongside Greg Wilson as an early resident whom championed early electro and jazz funk at the club

Also the numerous accounts of the regular operational goings at the club on a "normal night" will give anyone who's hung out at Brighton's Ocean Rooms a little grin I'm sure

Above is a brief snippet I filmed at the very first Vintage Festival in 2010 which was held at Goodwood near Brighton

The dj playing is Noel Watson who for my money turned in the set of the weekend on the opening night in The Warehouse Arena

The Warehouse Arena was a dedicated "outside space" curated by Greg Wilson situated towards the rear of the festival site

The arena played host to djs that had been essembled to represent British dance music culture up until the period of around 1988/89 with a few inclusions of less commerically minded djs such as The Unabombers (Luke) Optimo and The Idjut Boys (covering the post 1989 period)

Additional performances featured over the weekend included dj sets from A Guy Called Gerald, Greg Wilson, Winston Hazel, Andrew Weatherall, Norman Jay, Jazzy B, Graeme Park and Danny Rampling to name a few

Alas Vintage won't be held at Goodwood this year in 2011 so the sight of this particular version of the festivals warehouse arena in the British countryside is at present the only time we'll get to see this action taking place in such surroundings

DJ wise, personally speaking, Noel edged it and took the honours early on day one with a great 360 degree house session as the festival got underway down at The Warehouse

Shamefully, not knowing about Noel I needed to find out a little more before I could post the footage which is now coming up slowly to being twelve months old (better late than never)

I've embarked on some cyber investigating recently and have found an interview Noel did for DJ History a while back that nicely covers his credentials and tracks his career that I'd like to take this opportunity to share on the blog

Noel still djs now and again I'm lead to believe so we're on the case in trying to get him down to Brighon in the near future, fingers crossed !

Noel Watson

Noel Watson, along with his brother Maurice, who sadly committed suicide several years ago, were among the first DJs to play house music in London. At their club Delirium, initially known as a hip hop night, they became so unpopular for playing this new style of music that cages were built around the DJ booth to protect them from missiles.

Tell me how you got into dance music?
I started back in ’82 at the Demob warehouse parties that were run by Chris Sullivan and Chris Brick. Chris Sullivan who went on to run the Wag and was in Blue Rondo.

The Welsh boys.
Yeah.

But how did you start collecting records?
I was collecting records even when I was growing up in Ireland as a kid. I was really into music; me and my brother Maurice and two other friends had a band in Hollywood in Ireland, a little indie band. We were into the Only Ones, Roxy Music, punk, Stranglers. Basically, I got into black music through listening to John Peel Show as a kid in the ’70s, listening to dub and reggae. I was really into dub. Then gradually got more into funk and soul. One of the biggest soul records that formed me was Roy Ayers’ Running Away. That really got me into dance music, and then Stevie Wonder’s Songs In The Key Of Life. That was the start of it. When we came over to London, Maurice and I…

So you came over together?
Yes.

What year were you born?
’61

And Maurice?
‘62

Did you always get on with each other? You were always into similar things?
Yeah. We were like twins. We did everything together. We were very close.

Pretty unusual for brothers, usually a lot more competitive.
Well, we fought a lot and we beat the shit out of each other, as all brothers do, but at the same time we were very very close. Same interest in music, same interest in fashion, art, cinema, everything. We were very very similar.

What made you decide to move to London, was it a committee decision by the two of you?
Problems with violence and aggression in Belfast.

Are you Catholic or Protestant?
Well, we grew up Protestant, but my mum’s a Jehovah Witness! Strict Jehovah.

Did that cause problems?
Not really, my mum and dad were pretty cool. I could smoke dope when I was at home. My mum preferred that to drinking and coming home drunk. We weren’t drinkers, we were more stoners. Actually Maurice didn’t drink or smoke then, he was just into soft drinks.

Really?
Yeah. Until he came to London, and then he started getting more into it.

When did you move to London?
1979.

Why did you come, was it to form a band or something?
Yeah, to get into music and to get job opportunities in fashion. Maurice worked for Demob. He was a master tailor. We worked together in a tailoring business in Belfast. I run the shop downstairs and measured people up for the suits and he was upstairs making them.

You got a job quickly?
Really quickly. We got hooked up with people really quickly. We would go to clubs and got involved with the right people very quickly. The main club for me was Le Beat Route. Steve Lewis from Le Beat Route was my main inspiration to start DJing really. I used to idolise him. I ended up working with him in Black Market and I told him, ‘Steve you’re my hero!’. He would play a lot of Roy Ayers, a lot of rare James Brown, JB’s. I seen Madonna perform at Le Beat Route, she’d just come over to London. Boy George and all that lot was there. We were all standing there like this [arms folded] right in front of her, just watching her. She danced on this little dancefloor with two dancers. She did Everybody, her first single.

What was so special about Steve Lewis?
Just the eclecticism of his music choices. At that time, a lot of the clubs were cheesy and a lot of the music was… if you went to the soul clubs it was very straight, dress-wise it was very straight. Le Beat Route was a follow on from the New Romantic era. Steve Strange was going there. We were New Romantics. I used to wear some mad gear! I used to go and see the Slits and Pop Group and I got friendly with Bruce Smith who was the drummer and then I met Neneh [Cherry]. She was only 16 and basically we all lived in west London, in the Grove, so we knew all that crew.

What became Rip, Rig & Panic?
Yeah. Sean Oliver who was in RR&P was the DJ with me and Maurice who ran Battlebridge Road, the warehouse party scene. Sean was our third partner. We ran an illegal warehouse party there for about a year. Jazzie B would come, Nellee Hooper would come, Malcolm McLaren would come and bring us white labels of Buffalo Girls. Sex Pistols and The Clash would hang out there. Andrew McPhearson, the photographer would come and take pictures there. Neneh Cherry and Andrea Oliver would do the bar for us. I would give them £500 and she’d go down to Acton to get all the booze and set up a bar. They’d be on one side of the stage with the bar and me and Sean and Maurice would be on the other side, DJing. The only lights we’d have would be above the bar and the turntables. The rest would be pitch black. We put army camouflage netting all over the ceiling and the walls.

When did you start doing that?
’82.

What was the inspiration for that? I know Dirtbox was going, but there weren’t many precedents?
Well, we know about the rap scene and hip hop scene and they were just plugging things into street lamps so we thought ‘we’ll do the same’. So we were getting early rap records, records by Material, playing that sort of stuff.

What types of things did you play?
Maurice was already heavily into B-boys…

Scratching and stuff?
Barry K Sharpe used to come down and throw things at us because we would never let records finish! We’d cut them up. Maurice was an incredible cutter, mixer and scratcher. He could do everything, transforming, the lot. So the kids would come and watch, Nellee and all the Wild Bunch, the Massive Attack boys like Daddy G would hang out on stage and watch us cut. We’d be cutting up all the old JB’s stuff, the old breakbeat records Herman Kelly Dance to Drummer’s Beat.

How long did you do that for?
We did it for about a year and then the police turned up one night and they busted the club. They sealed off the whole road and wouldn’t let anyone down. It was packed every week.

You did it weekly!?
Yeah, every Saturday night. We handed out little paper flyers in black and white that Sean would do. They used to have all these little bizarre things from art books, very obscure imagery, and we’d just hand them out to people we knew. It was amazing.

How many people did it hold?
350 people and we’d ram it, totally ram it, people like Jazzie would come and not be able to get in n because we rammed it so much. It was wild.

How did you find the venue?
Sean found it. It was a disused school. We had a problem with drug dealers selling heroin in the toilets because heroin was a big drug then. A lot of the kids in the club were taking it. Heroin and uppers and downers, and puffing. We had problems with it, they took over the girls’ toilet to sell. We had to keep tabs on that and then the police got involved.

How did you get away with for so long?
Well, it was word of mouth, it was at the back of Kings Cross, near the Goods Yard and there were no residents there. It was derelict at the time so there was no one there to complain. No one knew about it except us and our crew.

What was the crowd like at the parties you did at Battlebridge Road
It was the cutting edge of London fashion, art, music people. Everybody was there. Right across the board, models, bands, cinema, art world, very trendy.

Cheap to get in?
No, it was expensive to get in, I think we charged nine quid to get in which was a lot of money. And we ran the bar.

You were raking it in!
Yeah, we were making money. I bought a flat, a BMW and a recording studio! [laughs]. We were making money, yeah. It was good fun., Everybody knew each other. If you knew the right people – and we did. Incredible.

How did the Demob parties come about?
It was in Roseberry Avenue in an underground clothes basement that they used for sewing machines and making clothes. It became derelict so we put sawdust down. Don Letts came down and shot a video down there for Freeez’s AEIOU. Terry Farley used to come and hang out with his crew. Neneh and Sade used to come and dance.

Terry told me he came down there and heard that new electronic sound for the first time there…
We were playing things like Run DMC Sucker MC’s, the beats, and mixing rap acappellas on the top of them. No one had heard that shit in London and people were going mad. It was mental. We’d run them to six, seven or eight o’clock until the sunlight came through. It was wild. This happened around the same time, so we were running lots of parties.

How long did Maurice work for Demob?
Well… Demob all caved in eventually. You’d go there on a Friday round the back, and you’d go behind a curtain and there’d be someone sitting there dealing up drugs. People would be coming in and buying drugs. Crazy. We did a massive Demob party at the Electric Ballroom in Camden it was that huge. But Tom Dixon…

The guy who was in Funkapolitan?
Yes, he and Toby Anderson used to be in Funkapolitan. They ran a club Titanic, I would go there as a guest and play with Tom Dixon.

Ah, that’s the one in Berkeley Square wasn’t it? Newtrament did that, too, no?
Yes.

Tell me about that.
That was on the other end of the scale from what we were doing, it was more fashionable west London crowd. You had Crolla, the shop, it was all of his crowd, very west London, fashion, money people. But it was a good club, you know. They had Newtrament, they had rap battles, it was mad, brilliant.

Who was Newtrament?
He used to come to our flat and pester me and Maurice. He knew we had all the breaks and we could cut and mix. So me him and Maurice would do beats together on DMX drum machines and synthesisers. We’d work together on music. Then he went off and made that record, London Bridge, he blew up for a little while. He was an amazing little guy. His name was Bertrand.

Was he a Yank?
No, British. Mad.

In what way?
He was a nutty mad guy, but way ahead of his time fashion wise. He’d wear a back pack, B-Boy gear, woolly hat, ski goggles. Maurice and I had a whole house in Westbourne Grove, three floors, one of the floors was just keyboards, turntables. We had six 1200 turntables set up at one point. We’d mix the Streetsounds albums in there, just hire in a tape machine. All the Electro albums, Maurice and I mixed them. We did Electro 2, 3, 4, 5, 7. Mastermind did 1, 6, 8 and 9. We’d do all the mixes in there.

Did you get a credit for that?
Yeah, it just says mixed by Noel and Maurice. Or we went under the name Bunny Rock for a while.

What was your reaction when you first heard hip hop?
I remember hearing Grandmaster Flash On The Wheels of Steel and it was at an 8th Wonder gig with Patsy Kensit. Graham Ball put on an 8th Wonder gig, Tom Dixon and the Funkapolitan guys were DJing. I think it was Tom who played Grandmaster Flash. Blew me away. What the fuck?! We’d been collecting early rap records on Sugarhill, things like Funky Four Plus 1, Spoonie G. It just blew us away.

When you heard the Flash, did you realise what he was doing? Had you read about it?
Maurice got on a plane and went to New York and sussed it out. He came back with a big record bag full of beats and records.

Did he literally hear it and think I’m off?!
Fucking jumped on a plane and went to New York. He ended up going back there and living. He married a Japanese girl who he worked with at Commes Des Garçons and ended up living there for ten years. That’s why he ended up developing all the addictions that he did and… ended up killing himself, you know what I mean? He would take anything… crack, cocaine, ecstasy… Maurice had ecstasy tablets before anybody in this country even knew what they were.

How come?
He was living in New York and hanging out with Jean-Michel Basquait. We did a Commes Des Garçons fashion show with Jean-Michel, we modelled in it and Jean-Michel was there, Andy Warhol was there and before we went out on the catwalk Jean-Michel went out and got a bag of coke, a bag of crack, and spliff. High as fuck! This was ’84 or 85. Naomi Campbell and Veronica Webb were in the show, but they were only young girls then. We used to sneak round the back and look at the girls changing. It was brilliant! Some photographer took loads of pictures of us and we had an after show party in this restaurant. Matt Dillon and all his mates were there dressed in teddy boy suits and they showed the fashion show and we were off our nuts. Just mad. Mental. Really mad days. Incredible.

So did you DJ in NYC?
Yeah. I DJed at Area, MK. Maurice would DJ at The World and when he would go to Japan, I would go over and cover for him.

So where was he DJing in NYC?
He went to set up Black Market in Chicago with Rene [Gelston] as well. They set that up in New York. He DJed at The Choice and all those little places. Maurice phoned me at six in the morning one night. He was putting the discs on for Larry Levan, because they couldn’t see the labels, because they’d been doing Special K. Maurice said, ‘Don’t ever take Special K. There are people here talking to the walls. Larry can’t even see the labels.’ But he was on it as well, he was taking loads of it. I’m no angel, but there are certain lines I won’t go over.

When did Maurice leave here?
About ’86.

What had you been doing up until then?
We’d been doing Delirium at the Astoria, 2,500 people every week.

When did you start doing it?
In 1985 we started doing it, with Robin King, Nick Trulocke, and Spencer Style. Spencer was a very affluent, very astute businessman. He knew the Chelsea set. He was a money guy. He was great at sorting out the venues, though. We would turn 2,000 people away every Saturday night. Our opening night, we had Run DMC, Beastie Boys, LL Cool J and Whodini all performing, and Jam Master Jay DJing with me and Maurice. That was our opening night party! I’ve got the original flyer for that night. Rachel Auburn did the VIP Room and Dave Dorrell. He did a little thing for us at one stage.

And it was a hip hop night, basically?
Yeah, it started off as hip hop. Maurice went to New York, came back with a bag of house records and went, ‘You’re not going to believe what I’ve got. There’s another new thing going on, wait till you hear this!’ Acid Tracks, stuff like that, started playing that.

What was your reaction when you first heard it?
Well, I was like ‘Look, Maurice, this is too gay orientated. I don’t really like it.’ But he was like, ‘Noel, this is the thing, ok?’. Even the Beastie Boys said to me, ‘Your brother’s barking up the wrong tree with this, man!’ We used to hang out with the Beasties when I was in New York. They were like, ‘What you doing man turning your back on the brothers playing this fag music’. But when I started listening to it, and the way Maurice played it I thought, ‘I can dig this, this is cool’. Then we brought Marshall Jefferson and Virgo and Jackmaster Funk to Delirium and put on a house night.

When was that? Had you already been playing house there?
Yeah. It cleared the floor. People booed us. Bottles and cans been thrown at us. Black kids didn’t like it. But the white kids did like it.

This is so weird, it’s the opposite in the Midlands and North…
London was different though.

Do you think it’s because they were into hip hop?
Yeah, it’s part of that aggressive culture that hip hop has.

What were the first house records you played at Delirium?
Marshall Jefferson Move Your Body was a classic, Virgo. We used to play William S, it’s on Trax. I’ll try and find out what it’s called. Master C&J with Liz Torres In The City. That was a big track for us. Then Maurice would play Love Is The Message, he would play a lot of the classic disco.

Which he’d got from going to New York?
Yeah.

How did house go over when you first played it?
There was a negative reaction to it. People didn’t want to dance it. It cleared the floor. You’d have people like Andy Weatherall and Phil Asher there sitting on the stairs listening what we were doing. Maurice was the first person to play Just Ice Cold Getting Dumb ’cos he brought it back from NYC, and he was cutting that up. Then he played the house stuff and people would be like, ‘I wish you’d go back and play the beats and cut them up’. But then it got to the stage where I’d do the cutting and playing the hip hop and the beats and Maurice was pure house and disco classics. He was like, ‘They’re going to have to learn to dance to this and they’re going to have to learn what this music is and we’re gonna have to be the ones who break this because it’s cutting edge.’

Did you feel like this was a mission?
Yeah. You have to educate. If you’re gonna be anything in life and put yourself out as the cream or the best… We were the top DJs in London at that stage. We played all the trendiest parties, all the best clubs, we were booked for all the top events and it caused a lot of grief with a lot of other DJs, so many people were jealous. But we were getting those gigs because we were cutting edge. You have to be cutting edge or there is no point in doing it. No one in this life gets anywhere by following a trend. Look at the Neptunes!

Tell me about the infamous cages [built around the DJ booth at Delirium]?
They were built around us because we were getting so much abuse. They were throwing things at us, bottle and cans, so they had a little cage to stop them hitting us and the decks.

So how long did it go from people thinking this was shit to thinking it was good?
Well, other people, like Dave Dorrell, started playing at it at Raw. Eventually we all stuck at it, then we did a night at Limelight, me and Maurice, it was pure house and we brought over Darryl Pandy. Love Can’t Turn Around was a huge record then and it became a hit, the club started getting busier and the crowd changed, the black kids stopped coming to the clubs we were doing. The white kids and the gay kids embraced it and it took off. That’s why we went to Heaven. Maurice moved to New York after the Astoria, I took Delirium with Robin King to Heaven. We had the whole club.

What was that like?
Fuckin’ amazing! Danny Rampling was there. People on the speakers at the end of the night.

When we interviewed Danny, he said that there was a small pocket of about 40-50 people who really got it and they were hanging out at Delirium.
Well, yeah. I’d seen those guys. First time I met Jenni Rampling she was trying to get into the DJ booth at Heaven. Paul Oakenfold was sitting with me in the booth and I said, ‘Who’s that girl?’ He said, ‘Her name’s Jenni, she runs a club called Shoom. You and Maurice should play there’. Maurice was going to New York and I was involved in Heaven so I thought it was conflict of interest, but I shouldn’t have done that. Eventually I did play at Shoom, when it was at Kensington High Street. I went to the original club at the Fitness Centre.

When did Delirium move to Heaven?
1987 or 1988. It was just before Land Of Oz. When we moved Paul took it over and took our fuckin’ crowd! Just carried on with what we were doing and took the whole acid thing. We started that, but he took it on and made it huge.

Could you see that happening when it was unfolding? Could you see it being huge?
Yeah, I could but I didn’t like a lot of the crowd they had coming to their clubs. I thought they were too rough. It was a rough crowd. They were thugs. But they were thugs, but they became loved up! And all the south London boys knew them but I didn’t, it was a different firm. I was west London.

What was it like going to Shoom?
It was amazing. Danny would play amazing records. The crowd were so… there was such a mix of people there, you’d have your loved up thugs, fashion people and Patrick Cox was standing behind Danny the night I was there when Danny was DJing. On the other side of them was 12 guys all in Arsenal shirts! ‘What the fuck is this?!’ It was a very different mix of people and the drug element with ecstasy had kicked in so they were all… By that stage I’d done so much in London, for six or seven years, and I thought there was a new little firm coming up. And I worked in Black Market for about two years and I was doing the big raves for Tony Colston Hayter. And ended up doing events and clubs for people that I wasn’t really into, but I did them… But the vibe was incredible.

What did Maurice think when it blew up?
He was in New York, so he was doing the World with David Piccioni, Frankie Knuckles and all that. He was involved in his scene there. But I would put him on as a guest at Heaven when he came over. But he would get the hump because he’d play Troglodyte by Jimmy Castor Bunch and stuff like that… Actually that was the last record we played at Delirium. Everybody was in the booth, Paul Oakenfold, the atmosphere was electric. They all knew it was the last one, it was an incredible feeling, but Maurice was a right purist and real music snob. He would get the hump that a lot of the people weren’t on the same level as him. He thought the house scene over here was too happy and drug-orientated; that people didn’t understand the culture or the music. He also didn’t like the fact that it became so white. When Delirium started it was 50/50.

How long did it take to go white?
About a year from it starting. The black kids just disappeared. Our policy for Delirium at Heaven was pure house downstairs and hip hop upstairs. We had guests but sometimes I’d play the whole night and I’d play Tony Humphries mixtapes over the system with ads and everything! But they loved it!

What about electro?
We introduced electro in the warehouse parties, before house. That got a fantastic reaction straight away. Off the wall. Pac Jam was huge, anything on Sunnyview was huge. Egyptian Lover.

What was your attraction to them?
It was a new genre, it was innovative. The Smurf thing was big, too, and the kids danced to them. A lot of hip hop then was not very dance-orientated, so that’s why we picked up on it.

Was there any crossover between you and George Power’s thing at Electric Ballroom?
No their crowds were naff. Too straight. Too boring. They weren’t trendy enough for us, we were more into the fashion things. Not because we were stuck up snobs, but that was our friends and our crew. I hung out with Tom Binns. Tom Binns is a top jewellery designer, he lives in LA. He was one of my best mates. We were involved in the fashion crowd.

When was the first time you came across ecstasy?
1987 or 1986 in New York, first time I ever took it was in the back of a limousine with Maurice. Cruising round clubs. You know Rammelzee, the rapper? Well, he wouldn’t get out of his limo, so we would sit in there taking Es. It could even have been 1985.

When did you first see it in London?
Yeah, yeah. They were taking heroin, cocaine, uppers downers, weed. But it was mostly coke and heroin. Battlebridge Road, Roseberry Avenue. All the clubs that I did were very drug orientated.

What about the fashiony crowd at the Hug Club doing it weren’t there
I don’t know. You see the Rip, Rig & Panic crowd… Sean died of Sickle Cell when he was only 28 and he was shooting heroin.

When Es first started appearing at Delirium was it obvious?
Yeah. It was alcohol and weed and coke at the start.

And what was the crowd at Delirium?
Very young, fashion, trendy, but across the board.

Is it true there was a riot at Delirium?
Yes, there was. I think it was Chuck Brown & The Soul Searchers. I think even on the opening night there was a big off. One of the guys from Def Jam, I remember him jumping off the stage and smacking someone because they were giving LL Cool J grief.

A few people mentioned to me it was a bit rough in parts.
Yes, there would be little gangs in corners and you couldn’t control all of them. There was a few muggings.

When did you notice Es coming into it?
At Heaven.

Can you find out exactly when you moved there?
It must have been 1987, it was so long ago…

What change did that make?
Suddenly everybody who was anti house music loved it. They were hugging each other. It was amazing. I played Strings of Life there and people would go mad.

Did you get to see the other guys playing it, too, like Colin Faver?I used to go and check Colin out at the Camden Palace a lot. Colin Faver was dope. He was wicked. I really respected him as a DJ. I met Kid Bachelor around, I ended up doing parties with him. Colin Faver, dope guy, major respect for him. He was bang on it, top boy. He was the don.

Who else played there?
Eddie Richards. Mostly I’d only go to Colin Faver and Eddie Richards’ things, because they were the only good nights. The rest of it was cheesy shit. I was quite a snob, I was a bit elitist, and a bit up my own arse. But I was only young, I was a kid, and you’ve got to have that arrogance to make it when you’re young.

Mark Moore?
Top boy. I used to go to his things. Really lovely guy. We loved Mark, I’d bumped into him when we were shopping. I remember him telling me about his first S-Express record. He said, ‘I think you’ll like this’. And it was amazing. I went round his flat and played it that night at Delirium. Dave Dorrell with Pump Up The Volume as well, I had a white label of that. I had Jellybean as a guest and he played it twice.

What were the big records at Delirium?
Criminal Element Orchestra, Strings of Life. I’d play classics as well. I’ll have to try and remember… Mr Fingers’ Can You Feel It. Marshall Jefferson. Fast Eddie. There were obscure ones as well that Maurice sent me from New York that I scribbled the name out on them!

So Maurice was still in the loop?
Yeah, he lived and breathed it till the day he died. He was obsessed, more than me.

He moved back here didn’t he?
He came back and DJed but he was wrecked. He’d copy Levan and turn the music off for maybe ten minutes…. ‘Maurice, for fuck’s sake it’s not New York!’ it went a bit pear-shaped. I sent him back to Ireland to try and get him on the straight and narrow, he got a beautiful house there. Then he decided to stay there. Then he topped himself. Six years ago this month, May 2nd. My dad died on May 5th, two days after him. It was all related to his missus, split up from her lost his child, he was heartbroken. She sold his fucking records in Japan, but there are some at my mum’s and there’s some unreal shit there. All sitting in a wardrobe in my mum’s in Belfast.

HMD are venturing south for the first Friday in June where they will be playing at Audio on Brighton Seafront in the basement to the seafront club space

Representing the capitals finest disco soiree will be Jim Stanton and Severino who will deliver the goodness well into Saturday morning

Disco Deviant are putting on the night as part of this years residency at Audio which has already featured Andrew Weatherall (2nd Birthday) and Greg Wilson, strong names with even stronger musical backgrounds

Brightonian's have been name checking HMD over the last few years plus the odd HMD T-shirt has been spotted on St James Street more recently so this should be a tidy knees up to kick start June's disco festivities south of London right here in central Brightonia

Definitely a major fixture at the warehouse parties in Brighton recently is Phunktastike who's found a regular spot on our playlist over the last few months

Phunktastike is Mariano Piriz from Buenos Aires in Argentina where he runs Spirit Soul Music which is his own label

With summer rapidly approaching this new release in May will come as a welcome addition to anyone into the less commercial house/disco hybrid sound

Publishing your own blog brings with it the opportunity to cover varied subject matters which otherwise may go uncovered

In the short space of time this blog has been running people such as Jeff Daniels, Rob Fahey, Cosmic Boogie, Tony Daly and Celia May have all been asked to provide some answers to questions posed through this site

Household names or industry movers and shakers they may not be, however their contributions play an important part within roots music dance music culture alongside those that achieve bigger accolade and public standing

Another such person and someone most people may not be familiar with is Carly Fitzpatrick

Carly isn't a crate digger, disco blogger, editor, party host or established local dj like the names mentioned previously, Carly is a landlady

So why the interview?

Well, Carly has witnessed the growth of the Brighton Groove Based/Disco movement more or less since it's inception through her management of two Brighton venues that have facilitated the cities increasing roster of djs, promoters and party hosts since 2007

Currently running The Globe (Brighton's Disco Pub) on Middle Street having moved from The Sidewinder in nearby Kemptown, Carly has provided a few answers to some long overdue questions

Expect some insight into what makes a good disco boozer, keeping a tight door policy in central Brighton and DUBSTEP !!!

Carly, you’ve been a Brighton landlady for a good few years now. Can you give us a brief history of the places locally that you have looked after?
Sure, I started as assistant manager at The Sidewinder just under 6 years ago. Two years after that I took it over as manager. Then after two more years of running it I came to run the fabulous Globe on Middle Street which is two floored venue including a cool basement space where we hold word of mouth parties and dj nights

What about the people that have worked alongside you ? I remember that your bar team at The Sidewinder was a tightly knit bunch of friendly characters. Care to comment on that period ?
It was basically me roping in all of my friends to come and help me run a pub, I think pretty much everyone I know did a stint behind that bar! We all got on so well and were always having a laugh which I think helped make The Sidey a fun place to be. When I came to the Globe I brought some of the staff with me including the camp dancing delights and bar heartthrob Jordan and I also gained some new ones including pocket rocket Anne (aka Spikey) who has absolutely boundless energy even at 4am when even *I* can't be bothered!

As I remember from a conversation we once had, your mother was involved in the brewery trade. Has there been a longstanding tradition of ladies or men from your family taking up the noble profession?
My mum worked at a pub in Dartford for years and when the landlady decided to give it up, my mum was the first person she offered it to. For some reason I saw both of my parents working every hour of everyday and when I decided to relocate to Brighton I thought, "Hell yeah I'll give that a go!" My mum has given it up now but she's definitely my landlady role model, she's ace. Well her and Peggy Mitchell

Talking of traditions, the use of the disc jockey down the local boozer is a relatively tried and tested formula now. Can you give us an idea of when you personally started to notice a more focused interest from local music lovers towards enjoying music in a non club setting?
I think I really started to take notice when I came to The Globe, so just under 2 years ago. My remit when I came here was "to make the Globe cool again", I think it had fallen into a trap of guaranteeing custom by using the basement as a function room for birthday parties, etc, rather than making it a destination pub for a good night out. I started booking DJs/nights downstairs and then realised there was this massive amount of people that weren't up for clubbing but still wanted to have a dance to good music and the Disco Pub was born! I absolutely love coming downstairs to the basement when it's really kicked off and a sea of people dancing their arses off! I'm like a proud parent

Were you aware that The Globe did act as a Disco Pub before your arrival with a few crews doing some one off events, such as Deep Systems who were a renowned Brighton Deep House night and record label ?
I knew about some parties that had gone down well in the past, including a really popular Northern soul night, but I think some promoters moved on to pastures new and rather than being replaced with other nights and DJs, the safe route was taken and the diary started to fill up with private bookings rather than people playing music

Naturally The Globe has now established a great reputation as the destination of choice for a musically astute and party savvy crowd dynamic in Brighton. The ability for a party organizer to shape a night in your basement musically or aesthetically with (décor) is obviously one of the draws of the venue, can you speak about anything else that sets the place apart?
One thing I'm very careful with is the door policy. We've gone through a lot of doormen in the past 6 months, but I've always kept the same rules. Obviously these rules can be interpreted differently by varying door staff but even if people get past him and into the pub and I don't think we're the right venue for them they get turned away. I'm not trying to be elitist but I just want a good crowd to come to a town centre pub and not be met with hordes of leering chavvy men or scantily clad orange girls. We don't always get it right, some do slip through the net! Our bouncer at the moment is amazing though so I'm hoping he stays for a while

If we take a step back to your time pre Globe at The Sidewinder, were you aware of any movements towards what you were going to find later on musically at The Globe?
I don't think I could tell at the time, no. At The Sidewinder I put on quite a mixed bag of nights and they all had their good and bad days. But at The Globe the success of your night along with Disco Deviant, The Music Box, Blacklodge and the rest has me convinced that we're onto a winner and the basement/disco combo is pretty perfect

Can you describe some of the more memorable situations you’ve found yourself in from behind the pumps at The Sidey and The Globe, the juicier the better please?
Haha too many! I've had death threats, marriage proposals, random insults and everything in between. On new years eve at the party you guys put on I got a lot of people asking me if I ran the pub and when I told them I did they were telling me what an awesome night it was, how much they loved the pub and what a good job I was doing which is always great to hear and it really made my night. I think the worst that's ever happened was at The Sidey when I chucked a young girl's mates out because I caught them doing something naughty and she decided to tip her pint all over me! I was bloody soaked! She did get called all the names under the sun, but it takes quite a lot to get me aggravated. I did find it funny afterwards!

A lot of DJ’s have passed through your doors as the Landlady that unwittingly has helped develop an arena where many can now find an opportunity to play music that Brighton clubs wouldn’t touch around 3 years ago. What are your thoughts about this, have you ever stopped to appreciate the contribution you have made and help you’ve given to local djs and promoters on the disco scene?
I don't know if I should get any credit! I like to think that I'm open to ideas and nights when promoters approach me. I think the popularity of your nights and disco as whole in Brighton is a product of a few things, a lot has changed in the music scene with a lot of the Nu Disco stuff becoming popular and that has made a difference in our musically astute city. The crowd that keeps supporting the local DJs in smaller venues instead of being tempted off to clubs by the big guns also helps a lot

You have a deep love for Dubstep and have been known to pull off some fairly impressive DJ sets in your time yet you allow some much disco and groove based music to emanate from both The Globe and previously The Sidewinder. How come You haven’t tried to push your chosen musical genre of choice above that of others?
Haha people always ask me this! We've had some one off parties downstairs where we've played electro, dubstep, drum and bass, techno, house and all sorts and they've gone down surprisingly well. However I don't think these nights have the same kind of broad appeal that disco based music has. When you have a look around at some of the nights there's a great mix of people and a nice crowd which I don't think would happen if we put on lots of "harder" music nights. Also I think there is an appreciation for the crate diggers and unknown DJs that play at our sort of nights, if I tried to put on dubstep or electro I think if we didn't have well known names people would rather hit the clubs

Let's talk about noise limiters for a bit. At The Sidewinder for many years there were no noise limitations in place whilst at the same time music was played at reasonable levels. This changed towards the end of your stint in charge with music levels finally reaching a level barely noticable due to residential complaints. Are there any concerns from industry insiders about this level of control a resident can now exert over the operations of a public entertainment establishment that in some cases has existed well in advance of that resident living next to it?
Yes absolutely. At The Sidewinder we had just one complainant who was so persistent in contacting the Environmental Health that it actually resulted in us having extra conditions put onto our license saying that we had to have a limiter which was set to a level that he basically decided. That meant that if I put in any extra speakers or sound I would be contravening my Premises License, which incurs MASSIVE fines and a license review, which could mean changes to how long you're allowed to be open, etc. All of that caused by just one person was so frustrating and it's been well publicised that similar things have hit other venues in Brighton recently. I just wish that it could be taken into consideration that maybe the one persistent complainant is being a bit over zealous and come to a compromise rather than just punishing the venue in an already difficult time for the licensed trade, whilst letting the neighbour call the shots

There were some amazing all dayers at The Sidewinder as part of The Go Bang Brighton Festival between 2008-2010. Were you surprised at both how many people came and also how little hassle it was to help set up?
Yes they were fantastic! I was pretty surprised at the amount of people through the door, but I guess it was a recipe for success in the summer with the two gardens, good music and I think we had a BBQ going too. I don't remember doing anything to help set up so it must have been pretty hassle free!

Do you feel there is the same buzz around the disco scene as there was when you were helping create an arena for it's development at The Sidewinder. Obviously the secret is out and more people are on board with staging parties at The Globe, has anything changed from your perspective?
I think there's more buzz actually. More people are playing it, making it and listening to it than ever I think. From my perspective at The Globe, it's easy to see the soar in popularity it's had not just from people coming down specifically for the nights, but from people wandering if for a quick drink on a Saturday night then ending up dancing till the early hours in the basement

Working as You have, for so long in Brighton at the helm of two pubs associated with playing dance music over any given weekend would You say that there’s a definite future for a less club orientated social scene to develop in the city even further than what we see happening at The Globe today?
I think there is. I think the youngsters (I can say that now I'm 27) will always go to clubs. However I think as you get a bit older you can't be doing with going to a club every weekend but still obviously want to meet up with friends, socialise and listen to good music. As long as people support the smaller venues putting on parties rather than following the herd to the big names then hopefully they'll be lots of little places popping up off the beaten track

A good percentage of the nights in the basement that You currently play home to are for want of a more precise term “disco” orientated. Could You describe what sets them apart from each other, can you notice a different approach between the DJ’s you hear play?
Everyone’s definitely got their own style, some err on the housier side of disco whereas others stick to more classic stuff. Then there are the added touches, the Go Bang decor (complete with ruching), the live drum, bass and vocals of The Music Box amongst other things. I try to make the weekends consistent, with Fridays a more pub style vibe with a DJ on the ground floor with an eclectic music policy and Saturdays having DJs in the basement and focused on the dance floor

You went to The Bloc Weekender at Butlins in Minehead recently, what kind of music stood out for You and will any of it reach your Ipod play list at The Globe?
There was a lot more techno there than in previous years when dubstep pretty much dominated but that was fine by me! Modeselektor, Daedelus, LFO, Mala, Aphex Twin, Laurent Garnier, Four Tet, Matthew Dear all stood out for me. As for The Globe's iPod, in the week we tend to play a very wide range of stuff, but some of the more palatable, chilled stuff like a bit of minimal techno or future garage will get a look in

We talked about the social dynamic that The Globe attracts, can you expand a little and describe the type of person one would find coming into the venue for a dance and a drink in the basement. Is there say a particular age range that you see more so than in other venues locally?
For the basement nights we see a lot of the 25-45 age group, so definitely a more mature crowd than you'd probably find at most places in the centre of town at 2am! We try and get an even mix of girls and boys as that always makes for the best atmosphere, if it's taking a drastic slide in the sexes ratio then we'll control who comes through the door until we're balanced again. Also people that are up for hearing a different sort of music to the normal funky/electro house Saturday night fodder

What can people expect from The Globe this year, any changes or are you sticking to the same formula?
More of the same hopefully! Some great nights coming up over the next couple of months and of course probably the most forward planned New Years Eve ever. We've also got lots happening during the week too, new chef, more midweek nights planned and allsorts. I'm also going to get my arse in gear and book myself to play as I haven't DJed out for ages!

You mentioned that your remit when coming to The Globe was to make the place a destination venue once again. If asked, what would be the one thing that you will take away from managing the site as being your greatest success whilst in the hot seat?
I'd like to think I haven't achieved my greatest success yet :) That or the tough task of keeping a centre of town venue chav free!

And finally can you chose three words that sum up a great night down in the basement when everything is kicking off and the DJ’s and parties are in full swing?

Thank You For A Great Night - Go Bang Warehouse Party April 2011

Just wanted a pass on our gratitude and thanks as always to everyone that made the recent April Warehouse Party in Brighton such a pleasure to put on

Unlike the first warehouse party back in February we started slightly later than usual as we now share the venue with live bands from time to time

We were really grateful however that the venue was turned around in a very short space of time by the stage crew and sound engineer (who was fantastic) and really did go that extra mile to set us up in time

We also moved the decks from being on the dancefloor to up on stage which is ok but a little strange when you see everyone coming into the main room looking at you

For now at least, we'll have to stay on stage as this prevents adhoc dancing in that area where all the amplifiers are located as beer/energetic dancing and electrical equipment don't mix that well by all accounts ;)

One of the obvious changes we're both now seeing in the warehouse is that people are arriving early to avoid any queues on the door, last night being no exception

We were greeted by some familiar friends and faces who had arrived early for a drink which also gave us both the opportunity to play to a busy dance floor from the off once we got started

As party orgainisers and djs this is an absolute dream situation to be in that we can't thank people enough for creating

We're now playing back to back a lot more these days as our confidence grows and by arriving early we get to play to people dancing which can only help us improve our musical delivery and tune selection as a pair

Huge props going out to our secret guests Neal and Sam from Maxxi Sound System who closed the session off nicely with a slightly more house based sound for the final two hours

I think they included a re-edit of The Night Writers - Let The Music Use You which is now in danger of becoming a late night flashback anthem at the session over the summer months

We used to play frequently with Neal and Sam (also Senor Mick and Johnny from Rounder) outside on the seafront at Life not that long ago, however with the lads now moving things outside of the city we rarely get to see them or hear them play these days which is a shame

However it was a pleasure (if just for one night) to be playing once again with these two who are now well on the way with their recent signing to The Future Boogie DJ Agency from Bristol, expect big things

Big props as always to Matt our VJ who managed a stunning job with the visuals, once again using lots of his own material spliced and manipulated with some familar cultural footage

The visuals have become such an important apect to these parties and we can't thank Matt enough for adding this vital element that really sets the scene in the warehouse every time

Matt's now used Barbarella and Paris Is Burning as the backdrop to his visuals over the last two parties and promises a slightly more trippier visual environment for June's gathering

Musically there were loads of great tunes flying out of the speaker stacks all night from all corners of the groove based spectrum with a slightly more house based vibe this time around which kept the engines running till 4am

We should really be recording these nights now or at least passing on the names of the tunes to people who are asking after them, there will be a short list of what worked on the dancefloor coming soon(ish)

Finally we'll be back in June for another "low key" gathering under Brighton Railway Station with yet more visuals, music and warehouse party spirit into the night

Naturally we won't be telling anyone who's playing on the night either

UK release back in 2001 which is a decade ago, ouch !!! age affirming time, how time flies

This was released just before I arrived in Brighton

Full of eager anticipation in light of the journey that lay ahead this kind of vibe wasn't on the radar at the time as a musical u-turn resulted with involment with the funk/latin/jazz/drum n bass all dayers that perpetuated the city instead

It wasn't until 2003 that house music regained it's place in my box as bookings such as those from Jon White enabled a more house based sound to return as Tom Bold and myself set up residency at 100 Watt which was Brighton's first Nu Disco party run by Jon at The Hanbury in Kemptown on monthly Fridays

Alas 100 Watt didn't see the distance, shame as there were some memorable nights stacked full of fantastic music played by the likes of Carl Faure, Bushy and Roo (Infinite Records)

There was even talk that Jon would team up with Nuphonic with a record label co-op idea but then Nuphonic folded as did our aspirations of nationwide bookings that the deal would of delivered

I wish I had picked up on this track back then but nevermind, 10 years on I'm pleased to share some sonics that will be revisited over the next few months

Just wanted to pass on our gratitude to everybody that made it down to the basement in March. Once again another splendid lights down low party vibe this time kicking off a brand new year all be it 3 months late

We've made a few changes to these jams what with the private mailing list keeping the party on a more intimate downlow tip and the inclusion of additional bassbins which vastly improve the sonic environment

Nice to be back once again in the basement with a year of groove based musical exploration and late night party operations to look forward to

Celia Mae Jones Answers Some Questions

Not that long ago the perceived Brightonian disco scene tended to be a fairly male dominated preserve that looked towards itself for sustainability and musical expression in a somewhat restricted arena of opportunity

Those days are now very much a distant memory as those that featured are now busy with either looking elsewhere for new networks of opportunity or have moved on to develop themselves within their own camps and social groups

Some have even vanished completely but undoubtedly those that remain continue to bring the musical vibrations all be it with a slightly modified concerted group approach

The once unintentionally poorly kept secret regarding the delights of disco is definitely out, with eyes and ears from once unrelated quarters now fixing their sights on the genre

However, if you keep your focus on the smaller grass roots picture eventually you’ll get to notice someone every now and again who casually bucks the trend amongst those that have established themselves and have moved aside so that others can nicely fill the gap left behind

One such person who is beginning to take on a potentially more prominent role in the evolution of the once very close knit and male dominated dj/promoter community within the city is Celia Mae Jones

Celia and her crew of drag/vogue/visual artists and DJ types could quite easily find themselves carrying on the disco charge from the front over the next few years with their strong focus on combining music, fashion, visuals and dance culture

The distinct possibility is, that their take on disco will be as faithful as you’re going to get from the next wave of protagonists already carrying out after dark operations on the cities dance floors

Celia was asked to answer some questions about hers and her crews influences, thoughts and musical leanings as we delve that little further under the surface and return to street level disco culture in Brighton with this interview

Expect a good insight into 80’s dance music, fashion, her take on what’s really going on out there and Windows 95 screen savers

- You and your girls (as you affectionately refer to the male members of your crew) are a collective, can you explain who you all are and what you individually bring to the group ?
The core collective consists of myself as the primary resident dj; Rowan Briscoe aka Roma Disko and Joey Evans – Resident vj and twink du jour (both of whom also make up visual artistes The Cocteau Twinks); and finally Mizu Sugai and Buka Ki – our exotic divas

- One of the most striking elements of your gang is your age dynamic. From a perspective of someone that is younger than your typical disco enthusiast can you describe what it feels like to be less weather beaten than many of the older Mirror ball Massive ?
Disco, more so than any other genre, has this incredible, diverse following. When I first started out, I encountered a lot of purists, which could be pretty intimidating, but it's no big thing. We're not out to impress anyone with our encyclopaedic knowledge, but rather to have fun with the music we play, and maybe introduce people to some newer stuff they haven't yet heard!

-Your night XΛΠΛDU combines both past and present musical influences in equal measures. Do you find that attracting people from your own peer group is say slightly more challenging for you than if you were to ultimately entertain the notion of a new music only policy ?
It's a total fallacy that 'young people' only care for new music. I've have been playing disco, in various forms, out and about for almost 2 years now and it's always been well received. There are plenty of nights that happen outside of the older 'disco scene' that dabble, for example 13Monsters, Teen Creeps and Tongues. I think, if anything, our aesthetic would be the most challenging aspect.

-You draw directly from musical influences and cultures that historically aren't well represented in Brighton, what sources have you gained your influences from that are pushing you in say a slightly more leftfield direction than the other disco themed nights locally ?
It comes from a wide variety of media: films, literature, the artists behind the music and of course a nostalgia for an incredible scene we never had the chance to experience. Films such as Paris is Burning, Tongues Untied and How Do I Look were initially a huge introduction. Undeniably, Youtube is an incredible source of footage and film clips that would otherwise completely fade into obscurity.

The video art we use is often a heady mix of this.

- The NYC Vogue Ball culture is of interest to you, Octavia or Willy Ninja ?
Will probably get a lot of shit from my girls for this but, because NO ONE can vogue better, I would have to say I'm with The House of Ninja.

- Your night leans heavily towards drag/gay cultural references, how do you see yourself fitting into Brighton's gay clubbing landscape, do you feel that you could attract a gay partesan local following ?
We don't strictly intend for the night be a 'gay night' per se, but sexuality is an intrinsic part of the music we play. Saying that, however, I think when a lot us came to Brighton, we imagined there being something within the gay scene that celebrated the musical history of the culture. When we didn't find it we really wanted to create it. Most gay clubs like to reference and play newer house versions of gay classics, we want to play the originals and really get to the heart and soul of the past.

- Musically you cover the many ages and aspects of disco and house music culture, how do you source the music you play at your parties
For me, the internet is without a doubt the biggest source. If I'm not out dancing, I'm a total bedroom dweller when it comes to music, and a penniless one at that, and will admit to downloading the vast majority of my music. There are so many blogs out there digging up treasures from the vaults it's impossible not to. If I fall in love, I'll scout out a hard copy. Trying to steer clear of discogs at the moment, for fear of another binge! I'm a total sucker for bad album artwork, so charity shop bargains also make up a large part of my record bag.

- You've picked The Jazz Place on Ship Street as the location of choice for your new party location, any plans to venture around Brighton or are you making the basement your adopted home ?
We really wanted to put on a basement party, and I've always had a soft spot for the Jazz Place. I think we've got designs on the rest of Brighton though- it wouldn't suit us to settle into a routine of a monthly night at the same venue. Not naming any names yet, but we're hoping to bring some bigger things and probably a live act or two down, so we may have to venture out from our sweaty basement. We shall see what the rest of the year brings!

XΛΠΛDU is a Brighton based dance party collective, comprising of DJs, video artists and fierce drag superstars. Building bridges between the alternative scene, the disco scene and the gay scene, the music policy of XΛΠΛDU is a fusion of exciting new tracks, high energy italo, house classics and, of course, plenty of disco. Over the coming months we will be bringing you a selection of exciting new artists, as well as DJs who are the pillars of the Brighton club scene, in addition to our team of resident DJs.

We are re-launching at our new basement venue The Jazz Place, Brighton on the 25th March.

Innervisions team up with German organization Media in Cooperation and Transition on this EP offering two remixes of award winning Sudanese musician Emmanuel Jal by Henrik Schwarz and The Knife's Olof Dreijer

Borne out of the MICT curated Sudan Votes Music Hopes album which featured Jal along with other notable Sudanese musicians, it's a further attempt to promote international awareness of the upcoming referendum in January 2011 in which South Sudan residents will vote on whether to become an independent state or remain under the tutelage of a united Sudan

Schwarz is on fine form, basing a typically hypnotic groove around a nagging bassline and singular key throb

An oscillating synth melody and rushes of strings add momentum and there's a brilliant breakdown into the harmonious vocal refrain for good measure. Dreijer's remix utilises the vocals brilliantly, crafting a deep bouncing melody that works so well with the off kilter syncopation and brushing drums
